Eden Triggers SEPA’s Water Scarcity Plan
– The lack of rain and the hot weather of the last few days is really beginning to show in some parts of our district. The River Earn really looks to be struggling, right along its length, but particularly in its upper reaches. The Ruchill Water is little more than puddles among the stones in its upper reaches. The local estate has suspended angling for the time being.
But most affected of all is the River Eden, where for the first time ever, the water level has been so low for long enough that it has triggered a response under SEPA’s Water Scarcity Plan. SEPA have announced that water abstraction licences, that is for irrigation, are to be suspended. While we welcome this response, a return of cooler and wetter weather cannot come soon enough to ensure the survival of the stressed fish populations in these rivers.
