ASSISTING NATURAL RECOVERY

WHY STOCK THE TAY DISTRICT?

It is recognised that stocking has a valuable role to play in the development of salmon stocks in the district but that it must be managed carefully to avoid negative impacts and waste.

The main aim of salmon stocking in the Tay district is therefore to assist the natural recovery of salmon populations where these have been depleted for some reason and where natural recolonisation processes alone are unlikely to be successful except in the very long term. This is done in conjunction with best evidence and guidelines for population restoration and is driven by needs which have been carefully assessed.

Electrofishing to monitor fish population density

Stocking is not undertaken in areas where healthy natural spawning populations are present.

All stocking is carefully assessed and monitored. Our Stocking operations are also regulated by Marine Scotland from whom we have to obtain a license to take broodstock out of season (from mid August onwards). Marine Scotland Stocking Policy can be seen here.

Our Kelt Reconditioning Project

Our hatchery relies entirely on “kelt reconditioning” which we think is unique in Britain. More on kelt reconditioning here.
